Secrets Of

The PSP Guru's: Downgrading Your PSP

This article will help you downgrade you r PSP from v2.0 to v 1.5.

I can say from first hand knowledge that this method has been known to be perfectly safe and work well if you follow the directions. Downgrading from 2.0 to 1.5

The following three files are necessary... MPH Downgrader 1.50 Update EBOOT 2.0 Update EBOOT

You will need to upgrade to 2.0 first, if you're using 1.51 or 1.52. Also note that many antivirus scanners will incorrectly detect the downgrader as a virus. You can see here it is 100% safe to use.

Remember this will ONLY WORK on a PSP with firmware V2.0.

1.You need to unzip the files MPHDowngrader.zip and EBOOT_1.50.zip. Use a program such as WinRAR, 7Zip, or WinZip (check Google). Once they are unzipped, you're ready to start the process.

2.Connect your PSP to your computer via the USB cable.

3.Once the connection is set up, open up My Computer and browse to the removable disk that is your PSP. There will be a few things we will have to setup here.

4.Go ahead and double click on that to open up your PSP on your computer, you'll be in what's called the root menu. There will be a PSP folder showing if you are in the right place.

5.Copy the following files over to this root directory. Make sure it is in THIS location IN the ROOT folder...NOT in the PSP folder or any other folder. Index.dat and h.bin should both be put into your root directory.

6.Once this is done, open up the PSP folder and then open up the Photo folder. Here, you will copy over overflow.tif file, but make sure you keep it in the Photo directory and not a sub directory.

7.Now, go back to the PSP directory and this time go into the Game directory. If there is not one already there, create a folder called UPDATE. It MUST be called UPDATE and nothing else.

8.Open up the new UPDATE folder you just made and then copy EBOOT.PBP into this folder from your computer. Once all of this is done, you're ready to start downgrading. So far, so good.

This is vital! Double check that you followed the above instructions to the letter before continuing.

Good now you can continue.

9.Disconnect the USB connection from the computer and plug the AC adapter into your PSP. As with all upgrades, you must have a certain percentage of battery life as well as the AC adapter plugged in, or this will not work properly.

10.Now go to the Photo icon on your PSP and scroll through the pictures to get to overflow.tif. You do NOT have to press anything. It will start automatically. Two strings of letters/numbers will appear. This is normal and good.

11.Wait AT LEAST 30 SECONDS and then turn off your PSP by holding the power button up until it fully shuts down. Then, go ahead and start your PSP up again.

12.Now you will now have to go over to the Game icon and scroll down to memory stick. Select this and you should see the 1.5 update.

13.Go and select it and start it up. Go through it as you've done before with your 2.0 update and follow the prompts. When the update reaches 99% it will crash and show an error. THIS IS OKAY. DO NOT PANIC. Once again press the power switch up until it fully turns off.

14.Now, turn the PSP back on. You will get another error. Just press the "O" button and it will restart after rebuilding the system data. Then just set it up as you did when you first got your PSP and you have a brand new 1.5 PSP.

Be responsible with it and don't abuse it.

Before you can watch movie downloads on your PSP, you need to understand the folder structure, file types and naming conventions. In this guide we explain everything you need to know about folders, file names and movie types.

The PSP does not play standard formats like wmv or quicktime mov files. It uses MPEG-4 codecs, and its own filenaming convention to complicate things a little. Once you understand these basics, you are well on the way to putting any movie you like on your PSP.

When the PSP was first launched it would only accept one format of movie - the MPEG-4 SP standard. With later updates however the superior AVC format (also known as H.264, or MPEG-4 Part 10) is also playable on the PSP.

MPEG-4 AAC files.

This is the default format initially used for the PSP. It is more properly known as MPEG -4 Simple Profile, or as MPEG -4 Part 2, and MPEG -4 AAC.

MPEG-4 AAC movies should be placed in the \MP_ROOT\100MNV01 folder and must be named with a M4V prefix followed by a random number, like this; M4V00001, M4V00002, M4V00003, etc., with an .MP4 extension.

When browsing your list of movies on your PSP, this type of file will be listed with a MPG4 tag.

MPEG-4 AVC files (Advanced Video Coding).

This format is playable on the PSP after firmware update 2.0 or later is installed. AVC files are also known as MPEG-4 Part 10, or more commonly H.264.

AVC files are of superior quality to plain vanilla MPEG-4 files, and are infact a variant of the exact same format used for the superb UMD Video disc movies.

MPEG-4 AVC movies should be put in the \MP_ROOT\100ANV01 folder and must be named with a MAQ prefix followed by a 5 digit random number like this, MAQ00001,MAQ00002,MAQ00003 etc., with an .MP4 extension.

When browsing your list of movies on your PSP, this type of file will be listed with an AVC tag.

Important Notes

Using lower case will mean your PSP will not recognise the file at all.Always remember wich folder to put the movie type and what naming convention to use so you must name all files using CAPS only.

Portable Play Station

Definition: The PlayStation Portable, or PSP, is a handheld gaming console made by Sony. It was released in 2004 in Japan, and in 2005 in Europe and North America.

The PSP is primarily a game console (PSP games come in UMD, or Universal Media Disc, format), but it can also play UMD-format movies. Using a memory stick, the PSP can play music and video files, and display picture files such as photos. This portable console can also connect to the internet via a web browser (not incuded in early firmware releases) and built-in wi-fi.

As its name suggests, the PSP -- or PlayStation Portable -- is a smaller, lighter version of Sony's PlayStation. It's not as powerful as the PS2, but more powerful than the original PlayStation, and it has a built-in screen and speakers so you don't have to plug it in to anything to use it.

Sony has also announced an add-on camera and a GPS device for use with the PSP, expanding its capabilities even further.

What Does It All Mean? Basically, what all these fancy specs come down to is a kick-ass handheld gaming machine with amazing graphics for its size, that can also play movies and music, display photos and image files, surf the web and, with every new firmware release, even more cool stuff. Phew!

As for whether or not you should buy one . . . well, you'll have to decide for yourself, but I've never regretted buying mine.
